Mario's Musings: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
I’m back.
It’s been a year and some change, but I’m back. I won’t lie to you, 2021 was a rough year for me. In January of 2021, my beagle Oliver got cancer and had to be put to sleep. At the end of the year, my father passed away after a second fight with cancer. Sadly, my dad and I had made plans that would never be fulfilled; seeing the next Indiana Jones movie on the big screen together.
You may ask: “But Mar, surely you’ve seen movies with your dad before?”
Yes, I have. However, after the year 2000, for some reason my old man decided he didn’t want to go to the theaters anymore after seeing Ridley Scott’s Gladiator. I’d constantly ask if he wanted to go to the movies with me, considering the last time we saw a movie in theaters together was the second Ace Ventura movie, but he’d always shake his head. We watched plenty of movies together at home and during the pandemic (Naked Gun was an especially fun time, I never saw him laugh so hard), but there’s something special about seeing a movie on the big screen (which might explain why I’ve never seen Avatar again).
Suffice to say, seeing this trailer brought out a lot of emotions for me.
Seeing characters like Indiana Jones and Sallah together one last time really hit me in the stomach. Hearing a new rendition of that iconic theme did the same. Knowing that Steven Spielberg wouldn’t be directing this and instead passing the mantle on to James Mangold is another bittersweet feeling (but Mangold is a great director who would bring a fresh take to the end of the franchise).
Honestly, my thoughts are kind of scattered when it comes to this trailer. The cast looks great, I’m excited for another chance to see Harrison Ford play my favorite film character, and I’m excited to find out what the Dial of Destiny is.
We’ll find out on June 30th.
